The Palais des Papes is the symbol of the radiation of the church on the Christian West in the fourteenth century.
Construction was started in 1335, less than twenty years, it is the leadership of two builder popes, Benedict XII and his successor Clement VI.
The monument is the largest Gothic palace in the world (15 000 m2 of floor, or in volume 4 Gothic cathedrals), and presents the visitor with more than twenty places, events at the theaters with universal resonance, including the private apartments of Pope and fabulous scenery murals executed by the Italian artist Matteo Giovannetti.
The monument also offers the visitor a regular cultural events throughout the year. Thematic exhibitions and educational themed visits, concerts are organized. During the summer a large exhibition of art occupies the main chapel, while the performances of the Avignon Festival, created by Jean Vilar in 1947, taking place in July in the courtyard of the Palace. The Popes' Palace hosts over 650,000 visitors per year. It is part of the 10 most visited monuments in France.
